The Chief Medical Director of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Teaching Hospital, Professor Olusegun Ojo, has said the institution is making progress in specialised healthcare delivery one year after its takeover by the Federal Government.
Ojo stated this in a press release issued on Friday to mark the first anniversary of the federal takeover of the Akure Annex of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital on October 23, 2025.
He said the hospital had recorded progress despite challenges associated with its transition into a federal institution, adding that management remained committed to improving healthcare services, staff welfare and institutional development.
According to the CMD, the hospital has strengthened its specialist services by engaging consultants and medical specialists across various disciplines to expand access to specialised treatment.
He added that the Federal Government had provided a take-off grant to support the hospital’s development plans and operational capacity.
Ojo expressed optimism that the funding would translate into improvements in infrastructure, facilities and service delivery as ongoing and planned projects progressed.
However, he acknowledged that the transition had created difficulties for some members of staff, particularly those yet to complete the absorption and documentation process or receive their salaries.
The CMD said management recognised the hardship faced by affected employees and appealed for patience, assuring them that their concerns were receiving attention. He added that staff welfare remained central to the hospital’s stability and effective operations.
Ojo also called on the Federal Government, Ondo State Government, staff, patients and other stakeholders to sustain their support as the hospital builds the administrative and operational structures needed to fulfil its mandate in healthcare, medical education and research.
He said management would focus on consolidating the gains of the first year, resolving existing challenges and positioning the institution to provide quality medical services to Akure, Ondo State and the wider Nigerian population.
