A pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, the Defence for Yoruba People’s Rights (DYPR), has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Tunde Disu, to redeploy Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Gotan, as part of measures to curb the persistent wave of political violence and killings in the state.
The group, which said it is committed to the protection, security and welfare of Yoruba people, expressed concern over the increasing incidents of insecurity and political clashes in various parts of Osun State, insisting that the reassignment of the police commissioner would help restore public confidence and ensure impartial policing.
Addressing journalists during a press conference in Osogbo on Tuesday, the National President of DYPR, Otunba Muyideen Olamoyegun, alleged that the state police command had failed to maintain political neutrality since Mr. Gotan assumed office.
Flanked by other members of the organisation, Olamoyegun maintained that the redeployment of the police commissioner was necessary to tackle the growing insecurity and bring perpetrators of political violence to justice.
According to him, reports and complaints from residents across the state indicate widespread concern over the worsening security situation and what many perceive as inadequate response by the police to rising incidents of violence.
He said, “According to reports and complaints received from residents across the state, many citizens have become increasingly worried about the deteriorating security situation and the apparent lack of decisive action to address these incidents.
“Public confidence in the ability of the state police command to effectively tackle these challenges has continued to decline. We therefore urge the Inspector-General of Police to take immediate steps to strengthen security operations in the state and ensure that all criminal activities, regardless of political affiliation, are thoroughly investigated.”
The group further called on the Nigeria Police Force to identify, arrest and prosecute all individuals involved in acts of political violence, intimidation and killings in accordance with the law.
Olamoyegun stressed that justice, accountability and impartial law enforcement remain critical to restoring peace and public confidence in the state.
“The Defence for Yoruba People’s Rights believes that justice, accountability and impartial law enforcement are essential for restoring public confidence, promoting peaceful coexistence and ensuring that democracy thrives in Osun State,” he stated.
“We therefore appeal to the Inspector-General of Police to take the necessary steps to restore peace, protect lives and property, and guarantee the safety of all residents of Osun State.”
The call comes amid growing concerns over recurring political tensions and violent attacks in parts of Osun State ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
