Osun State Governorship Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced plans to unveil a comprehensive energy development blueprint aimed at transforming the state’s electricity sector and driving industrial growth.

The initiative, titled “Powering Osun’s Future,” is designed as a practical framework for energy governance and sustainable electricity development in the state.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Co-Chairperson of the Media and Publicity Committee of the APC Governorship Campaign Council, Mrs. Funke Egbemode, the agenda will provide a technically sound roadmap for unlocking Osun’s energy potential and positioning the state as a major player in Nigeria’s evolving electricity market.

The council noted that constitutional and legislative reforms initiated by the Federal Government have created opportunities for states to actively participate in electricity generation, transmission and distribution.

It recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari, on March 17, 2023, signed the Fifth Alteration to the 1999 Constitution, removing electricity from the Exclusive Legislative List, while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu subsequently assented to the Electricity Act 2023 on June 9, 2023, paving the way for state electricity markets and regulatory frameworks.

The APC, however, expressed concern that Osun remains the only state in the South-West yet to fully domesticate and implement the Electricity Act despite possessing considerable advantages in the power sector.

The party highlighted Osun’s strategic position as host of the National Control Centre of the national grid in Osogbo, as well as its abundant solar energy resources, hydroelectric potential in areas such as Owala, Osun, Ila and Erin-Ijesa, and a growing industrial and agricultural economy with increasing energy demands.

The statement disclosed that the APC governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), had earlier constituted an Electric Power and Gas Infrastructure Technical Team made up of industry professionals to develop a workable roadmap for the sector.

According to the campaign council, preliminary studies conducted by the team indicate that Osun possesses the capacity to become a net exporter of electricity through a combination of small hydro projects, gas-powered generation, renewable energy initiatives and effective utilisation of its transmission infrastructure.

It stated that with appropriate policies and strategic investments, the state could evolve from being largely dependent on the national grid to becoming a major electricity producer, creating jobs, attracting investments, boosting internally generated revenue and improving energy security.

The APC said the date for the formal unveiling of the Strategic Energy Agenda would be announced soon, assuring residents that the party remains committed to delivering reliable electricity supply and accelerated industrial development.

The campaign council further stated that an integrated resource plan and sustainable power delivery architecture would be activated upon Oyebamiji’s inauguration as governor to unlock the state’s energy resources and support economic transformation.
