The Ondo State Government has traced the persistent offensive odour around Alagbaka G.R.A. Extension in Akure to waste discharged from a nearby poultry and goat farming facility.
The government launched an inspection following complaints from the management and workers of Crest 106.1 FM, as well as guests and customers who reportedly experienced discomfort from the odour.
The Commissioner for Environment, Dr Tob Loko, led officials of the ministry, including the Permanent Secretary, Akin Omotola, on an inspection of the affected area on Monday.
The team inspected the route from the Crest FM premises through Rev. Remi Olu Adegboyegun Avenue and MBC Akinbileje Avenue before reaching the farming facility identified as the source of the complaint.
According to the ministry, the inspection revealed that waste generated from the poultry and goat farming activities was being discharged through a pipe into the drainage system.
The waste was reportedly flowing towards adjoining residential areas, with the odour spreading through the drainage network to nearby homes and business premises.
The ministry said the situation was responsible for the offensive smell noticed around Crest FM and other parts of the neighbourhood.
Following the discovery, Loko directed the ministry to issue an Abatement Notice to the operator of the facility in accordance with relevant environmental regulations.
The commissioner described the incident as a serious environmental and public health concern, stressing that no individual or business was exempt from environmental regulations.
He warned that activities capable of causing offensive odours, polluting the environment or exposing residents to health risks would attract regulatory action.
