A member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Kamoru Omokoye, has been killed by suspected cultists at Abijo Bus Stop in the pIbeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.
Omokoye was reportedly attacked around 9am on Sunday when two men arrived at the bus stop in an unregistered Lexus RX 350 and opened fire on him.
A police source in the area, who confirmed the incident, said the victim sustained a gunshot wound to the head during the attack.
The source said the assailants immediately fled the scene in the vehicle after shooting Omokoye.
He was subsequently rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Epe, for medical attention but was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.
“Two men suspected to be cultists arrived at Abijo Bus Stop in an unregistered Lexus RX 350 and shot the deceased victim, who was a member of the NURTW. The attackers immediately sped off from the scene,” the source said.
Following the incident, police detectives visited the scene and searched the surrounding area in an effort to track down the suspects.
Meanwhile, an anti-cultism advocacy group, Naija Confra, said Omokoye, also known as Zobo, was at a drinking spot where local gin, popularly called ogogoro, was sold when the gunmen arrived.
The group alleged that several other people sustained gunshot injuries during the attack, while those at the scene reportedly fled when the shooting began.
Naija Confra also claimed that Omokoye had previously worked at Awoyaya Bus Stop before moving to GRA Bus Stop and had an eight-month-old child.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said an investigation had commenced.
“The police have commenced investigation into the incident,” she said.
The killing comes amid renewed concerns over violent attacks and cult-related activities in parts of Lagos, with residents and security agencies facing continued pressure to curb such incidents.
The police have yet to announce any arrest in connection with Omokoye’s killing.
