Nine people lost their lives on Monday after a commercial bus collided with a truck on the Ijebu-Ode-Ore section of the Ijebu-Ode-Benin Expressway in Ogun State.
The crash occurred at about 4:55pm around the Bethel area of the highway and involved a white Toyota Hiace bus belonging to Delta Line and a white Sino Truck operated by Bill Gas Solution Ltd.
The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole.
According to the FRSC, the victims comprised three men and six women, all of whom died in the crash.
Odunsi-Oyewole said the accident occurred during rainfall, leaving the road surface wet, while preliminary findings pointed to speed violation as the likely cause.
He said the FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the distress call.
“The FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene within two minutes of receiving the report, arriving at 1658hrs,” he stated.
The bodies of the victims were recovered and taken to the morgue of the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, while the vehicles were towed to the Ilese Police Station by the Ilese Police Motor Traffic Division.
The Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, especially commercial drivers, to exercise greater caution when driving during rainfall.
Ogunjobi advised road users to observe speed limits, maintain adequate distance from other vehicles and avoid dangerous manoeuvres.

He warned that speeding on wet roads could result in loss of control because of reduced tyre grip and poor visibility.
The FRSC condoled with the families of the deceased and urged motorists to make road safety a priority to prevent further loss of lives.
