Authorities of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) have debunked the reported arrest and detention by the police in Abuja in connection with his role in the just-concluded Osun State governorship election.
“Prof. Ogunwole was never arrested and detained by any security agency,” the university stated.
Ogunwole, who declared the incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke, winner of the August 15;Governorship Election after the collation of results, served as the Returning Officer for the election.
Reports have gone viral in the social media that he is being detained by the police in Abuja due to his role in the election.
However, the university in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Communication, Dr. Sunday Saanu, dismissed its Vice-Chancellor’s alleged arrest and detention as false.
Urging the university community and members of the public to disregard the false reports, the statement confirmed that Ogunwole left Oye-Ekiti for Abuja on Monday to attend to matters relating to the university.
It said the university was surprised that some individuals subsequently took to the social media to circulate what it described as fabricated information that the Vice-Chancellor had been arrested and detained by security operatives because of his involvement in the Osun election.
FUOYE further explained that the Vice-Chancellor has remained engaged with his official responsibilities and has been working to advance the affairs of the institution.
The university management, therefore appealed to the public to disregard the reports, describing them as the handiwork of mischief makers.
The university stressed that there was no basis for linking the Vice-Chancellor’s official trip to Abuja with any alleged arrest or detention.
It urged members of the public, particularly social media users, to verify information before sharing reports capable of causing unnecessary alarm or damaging the reputation of individuals and institutions.
Prof. Ogunwole’s role in the Osun election attracted attention following his declaration of Adeleke as the winner of the keenly contested governorship poll.
Adeleke of the Accord Party defeated his major challenger, the All Progressives Congress candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, in the election.
