Benue at 50: Ooni hails Gov Alia, recalls memorable NYSC experience in State

Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has commended the Governor of Benue State, for what he described as his commitment to good governance and development, while reminiscing about his memorable National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) experience in the state.

He made the remarks on Monday at his palace in while receiving a delegation from the state led by Deputy Governor Samuel Ode
.
The delegation was at the palace to formally invite the Ooni to serve as the Royal Father of the Day during activities marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of the state.

Speaking during the visit, Ode said he was representing Governor Alia to personally deliver the invitation ahead of the week-long celebration scheduled for June 22 to June 27, 2026.

He explained that although Benue State was created on February 3, 1976, the golden jubilee celebration, initially planned for February, was postponed due to prevailing security challenges.

The deputy governor described the Ooni as one of Africa’s most influential traditional rulers whose contributions to national unity, cultural promotion and youth development have earned him widespread respect across Nigeria and beyond.

“The governor specifically directed that this invitation be delivered personally because of the immense respect he has for His Imperial Majesty. We have continued to witness his impactful leadership, advocacy for peace and promotion of cultural values,” Ode said.

Responding, the Ooni expressed gratitude to Governor Alia and the people of Benue State for the honour, describing the governor’s emergence from the clergy into politics as a remarkable journey that has inspired many Nigerians.

“I have tremendous respect for Governor Hyacinth Alia. His successful transition from the clergy into politics and his commitment to service and the welfare of the people remain admirable,” the monarch said.

The Ooni also used the occasion to reflect on his service year in Benue State, describing it as one of the most memorable experiences of his youth.
According to him, the warmth, hospitality and generosity he received from the people of the state left a lasting impression on him.

“Benue occupies a special place in my heart. During my NYSC days, the people welcomed me with open arms and treated me like one of their own. Their kindness, hospitality and sense of community remain unforgettable,” he said.

The monarch further praised the people of Benue for their resilience and immense contributions to Nigeria’s agricultural development, describing the state as a critical pillar in the country’s food security drive.

He also commended Governor Alia’s administration for its efforts in addressing developmental challenges and promoting peace across the state.

Accepting the invitation to participate in the anniversary celebrations, the Ooni pledged his full support for the event and congratulated the people of Benue on the milestone.

“I am deeply honoured by this invitation and I will participate wholeheartedly in this historic celebration. Benue State has every reason to celebrate its rich heritage, achievements and the resilience of its people over the last five decades,” he stated.

The Ooni concluded the meeting by offering royal blessings and prayers for Governor Alia, the government and people of Benue State, praying for enduring peace, prosperity and greater development as the state marks its golden jubilee.
