Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the recent wave of defections from the party, describing the pattern of resignations by some members as predictable, uninspiring and incapable of creating the impression of a crisis within its ranks.
The development comes amid a string of resignations by prominent party members over the past week. Many of the defectors cited alleged imposition of candidates, unresolved internal disputes and dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership as reasons for their departure.
However, in a statement issued on Monday, the APC’s Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, said the gradual resignation of members in “trickles” had become repetitive and ineffective.
According to him, the recurring announcements of defections have become “obsolete, tiresome and boring,” adding that the strategy had failed to attract the desired public sympathy or portray the party as divided.
The party argued that those behind the resignations lacked political tact and diplomacy, maintaining that the development no longer commands significant public attention.
Olabisi questioned the rationale behind what he described as an “unusual and boring defection game,” urging the actors involved to rethink their approach if they hoped to make any meaningful political impact.
The APC also alleged that some of the resignations were influenced by financial inducements, claiming that investigations revealed that certain individuals were persuaded to leave the party for as much as N5 million each.
Despite the departures, the party expressed confidence that the defections would not affect its chances in the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
Rather, the APC described the exits as a necessary cleansing process, insisting that only committed and loyal members would remain to work for the success of its governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO).
The statement commended party faithful for their steadfastness and loyalty, asserting that those leaving the APC might have constituted obstacles to the party’s electoral ambitions.
“God has answered the prayers of our members by exposing those who may have constituted a clog in the wheel of our governorship victory,” the statement read.
While acknowledging the constitutional right of every citizen to freedom of association, the APC argued that political decisions often carry moral implications and could shape public perception of those involved.
The party nevertheless wished the defectors well in their new political platforms, stressing that it had no regrets over their departure.
It also called on members to remain vigilant and committed ahead of the governorship election, expressing hope that any remaining dissidents working against the party’s interest would be exposed.
The statement comes as political activities continue to gather momentum across Osun State, with parties intensifying preparations for the forthcoming governorship election.
