The Commandant of the Nigeria Army Depot, Osogbo, Brigadier General Buhari Madaki, has commended journalists for their indispensable role in promoting national security through responsible reportage, accurate information dissemination, and ethical journalism.
He gave the commendation while receiving members of the executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Depot in Osogbo.
Describing the media as a critical partner in the nation’s security architecture, he stressed that the fight against insecurity cannot be left to the military alone.
According to the Commandant, national security is a shared responsibility that requires the active collaboration of all stakeholders, including the media, civil society organizations, and the general public.
He noted that journalists, through their reports and analysis, play a vital role in shaping public perception, promoting unity, and discouraging narratives that could undermine peace and stability.
Madaki further emphasized that responsible journalism, especially in times of security challenges, is essential in preventing the spread of misinformation and panic.
He urged media practitioners to always verify their facts and maintain professionalism in their reportage, particularly on sensitive security matters.
Describing the visit as both timely and significant, the Commandant explained that the Nigeria Army Depot, Osogbo, which was established in June 2025, serves as a key training institution for non-commissioned officers of the Nigerian Army.
He added that the Depot was created as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the operational efficiency, discipline, and combat readiness of personnel in addressing emerging security threats across the country.
He also underscored the importance of strategic awareness and informed decision-making—what he referred to as “cognizance”—in tackling terrorism, insurgency, and other forms of criminality.
According to him, the ability to understand evolving security dynamics and respond appropriately remains crucial in winning the fight against insecurity.
Brigadier General Madaki reiterated the Nigerian Army’s commitment to professionalism, continuous training, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders, assuring that the military will continue to uphold its constitutional mandate of protecting the nation’s territorial integrity.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin, commended the Nigerian Army for its resilience, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the country against insurgency and other security threats.
He acknowledged the critical role being played by the military in maintaining peace and stability, noting that their efforts have not gone unnoticed by the public and the media alike.
Aboderin further emphasized the need for sustained collaboration between journalists and security agencies, stating that such a partnership is essential for promoting peace, national unity, and sustainable development. He assured the Commandant of the NUJ’s continued support in ensuring balanced, fair, and responsible reporting of security-related issues.
The NUJ Chairman also highlighted the importance of building mutual trust and understanding between the media and the military, adding that regular engagements such as the courtesy visit would go a long way in strengthening that relationship.
Other top officials of the Nigeria Army Depot present during the visit included the Deputy Commandant, Colonel M.E. Obi, Major Y.A. Ibrahim, and Captain A.A. Bindawa, alongside other senior officers.
The visit further reinforced the growing synergy between the media and the military, underscoring their shared commitment to fostering a safer and more secure society.
