Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife has explained why it cancelled a proposed lecture by former Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, alleging failure to follow established institutional procedures.

In a statement released by its spokesman, Abiodun Olarewaju, the University disclosed that the invitation to Obi was initiated by a group within the student body without proper and timely notification to the management.

According to the statement, the University only became aware of the calibre and status of the invited guest on Friday, barely 24 hours before the scheduled event, making it difficult to complete necessary preparations.

The institution emphasised that visits by high-profile personalities require adequate planning, including security coordination with relevant agencies such as the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), to safeguard both the guest and members of the University community.

“As a result of the short notice and the inability to put in place essential logistics and security arrangements, the University could not approve the use of Oduduwa Hall for the programme,” the statement explained.

OAU management stressed that the decision was taken strictly in the interest of safety, orderliness, and adherence to established protocols guiding the use of its facilities.

The University further clarified that the action should not be interpreted as a slight against Peter Obi, noting that the institution holds the former Anambra State governor in high regard.

It added that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adebayo Simeon Bamire, remains committed to encouraging intellectual discourse and hosting distinguished personalities, provided due process is followed

The University, therefore, urged students and organisers of campus events to always comply with laid-down procedures to ensure smooth coordination and the safety of all participants.
