The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2027 election, Omoyele Sowore, has questioned who is currently overseeing the affairs of Nigeria following the absence of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima from the country.
Sowore raised the question in a post on his official Facebook page on Monday, criticising the President and his deputy for travelling outside Nigeria without, according to him, formally transferring authority to another official.
Tinubu reportedly left Nigeria on August 30 for a working vacation in Europe as part of his annual leave.
Shettima subsequently departed Abuja on Saturday to represent the President at the ongoing 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States.
The Vice President arrived in New York on Sunday and is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the UNGA proceedings.
Reacting to the development, Sowore expressed concern over the simultaneous absence of the President and Vice President from the country.
He wrote, “Tinubu has been away for more than 21 days, allegedly on vacation.
“The VP Kashim Shettima has also left Nigeria for UNGA, with no handover notes in sight. Who is in charge of Nigeria at the moment?”
Sowore’s comments come amid public attention on the President’s absence from the country and Shettima’s representation of Nigeria at the UN General Assembly.
The Presidency has not indicated that the President has transferred his constitutional powers to another official during his absence.
