Osun State has made a remarkable leap in Nigeria’s second edition of the Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking Report.

The state moved from 30th position in 2024 to 6th out of 36 states in 2025.

This ranking, supported by the Federal Government and the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP), evaluates how Nigerian states are managing climate policies, institutional frameworks, and local climate actions.

With an impressive total score of 265, Osun is now the second-best performing state in the South-West region, trailing only Lagos State. This outstanding progress reflects the visionary leadership and strategic investments of His Excellency, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, Executive Governor of Osun State.

Under Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration, climate change, renewable energy, circular economy, and environmental sustainability have become key pillars of governance. The state has launched several impactful initiatives, including:

Increased funding for climate-related projects and programs
Creation of a Department of Climate Change and Renewable Energy within the Ministry of Environment and Sanitation

Climate project implementation and monitoring at the local government level

Integration of climate education and environmental awareness in schools

Regular training programs for climate officers at state and local levels

Strengthened collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment and national and international partners

Osun State also ranked highly for online visibility in climate governance, signaling improved transparency and public engagement with its environmental efforts.

At the awards ceremony held at Bon Hotel Octagon, Abuja, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, alongside the Director of Climate Change and Renewable Energy, accepted the award on behalf of the state government. The achievement was dedicated to the people of Osun and Governor Adeleke’s unwavering dedication to sustainable development.

Special recognition was given to Professor Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe, the Director-General and Special Envoy on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, whose leadership has been crucial to Osun’s climate governance success.

Osun State remains committed to driving climate action, renewable energy transition, circular economy initiatives, and sustainable development to secure a greener and more resilient future for all its residents.
