Osun State Government has declared Wednesday, June 17, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate Hijira 1448AH, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Honourable Aderibigbe Kayode Rasheed, on behalf of the state government.
According to the statement, the public holiday is intended to enable Muslim faithful across the state to celebrate the Islamic New Year and reflect on its spiritual significance.
The government extended warm greetings to Muslims in Osun State and beyond, praying that the occasion would usher in peace, prosperity, and unity for the state.
“May this occasion bring peace, prosperity and unity to our great State,” the statement read.
The state government also urged residents to embrace peaceful coexistence during the celebration, calling on citizens to shun rancour and disharmony while participating in activities that promote unity and togetherness.
Hijira, also known as the Islamic New Year, commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah, an event that marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.
The Osun State Government reiterated its commitment to fostering religious harmony and peaceful coexistence among residents of the state.
