Osun Amotekun arrests six suspects

Six suspected criminals alleged to have been involved in various offences ranging from burglary, theft, and fraud to illegal possession of firearms have been apprehended by operatives of Osun Amotekun Corps.

The arrests, our correspondent learnt followed multiple distress calls from concerned residents, highlight the Corps’ unwavering commitment to community-based security and rapid response.

One of the suspects was allegedly caught red-handed stealing electrical wires from an uncompleted building within the city. Upon interrogation by the Amotekun Operations Unit, he reportedly confessed to engaging in similar acts for over three years.

He revealed that he regularly sold the stolen wires to a buyer known as “Tini” at Sabo, Osogbo, for just ₦10,000 — even though the actual value of the wires exceeded ₦350,000.

In another incident, another suspect, aged 32, from Ibadan, was apprehended while attempting to steal money from a mosque in the Ogo-Oluwa area of Osogbo during early morning prayers.

Worshippers raised the alarm, prompting Amotekun operatives to respond swiftly and arrest the suspect on the spot. He admitted to the crime, disclosing that it was not his first time targeting places of worship.

Another suspect, 21, from Iragbiji was arrested for allegedly stealing cocoa from a farm in Apara village. Prompt alerts from vigilant residents enabled Amotekun officers to track and arrest the suspect. During questioning, Yusuf confessed and claimed it was his first attempt, stating he planned to sell the cocoa beans for personal gain.

The Corps also arrested another, 39, from Okinni, who was allegedly caught defrauding local foodstuff vendors in Osogbo by making fake mobile money transfers. After fleeing from his most recent scam, he was tracked to his hideout and arrested.

He reportedly confessed to the crime and admitted to having used the same method to scam nearly ten vendors

Two additional suspects aged 30, and M45, a commercial motorcyclist from Osogbo, and a security guard from Ibadan — were arrested around 12:25 a.m. in the Ita-Olokan area of Osogbo during an attempted shop burglary.

They were found in possession of a cutlass and a locally made firearm. Thanks to timely alerts from local residents, Amotekun officers apprehended them before they could carry out the operation

Speaking to journalists in Osogbo, the Corps Commander of Osun Amotekun, High Chief Dr. Hon. Adekunle Isaac Omoyele, lauded the vigilance and professionalism of the operatives involved.

He highlighted the swift and coordinated efforts that led to the arrests and reiterated that the crimes committed ranging from burglary to fraud and illegal possession of weapons — are serious violations under Nigerian law.

Omoyele also expressed gratitude to the people of Osun State for their cooperation and commitment to safety, encouraging continued collaboration in tackling crime.

“We urge our people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or security threats in their environment. The Osun Amotekun Corps remains resolute in its mission to protect lives and property across the state,” he stated.
