The United States has congratulated Nigeria on its 66th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to deepening bilateral relations between the two countries.
The US Department of State conveyed the message in a statement issued by the Office of the Spokesman on Thursday.
The department said Washington valued its longstanding relationship with Nigeria and appreciated the substantive discussions held between both countries over the past year.
“On behalf of the United States of America, I extend my congratulations to the people of Nigeria on the 66th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence,” the statement said.
The US described Nigeria as Africa’s largest democracy and one of the continent’s biggest economies, noting that the country remained an important partner in efforts to promote regional stability and economic development.
“The United States is proud to stand alongside Nigeria in pursuit of these common goals,” it added.
The statement said both countries shared a commitment to advancing several areas of mutual interest, including democratic principles, religious freedom, trade and commercial relations, peace and security.
“Our two nations are bound by a shared commitment to continued progress on our common priorities, rooted in mutual democratic principles, the protection of religious freedom, a growing commercial relationship, and a commitment to fostering peace and security,” the department stated.
