The newly passed Osun Electricity Law is a game-changer that will significantly boost the state’s economy and attract private sector investments into the power sector.
Governor Ademola Adeleke declared this while reacting l to the passage of the Executive Bill by the State House of Assembly
He said the legislation would unlock numerous opportunities, particularly in off-grid power generation, while helping to resolve the persistent power supply challenges facing the state.
His words, “This new law is a major step toward diversifying Osun’s energy sources and creating a more reliable electricity supply system.
“It will open the door for investors, promote the use of renewable energy, and provide a comprehensive framework for energy regulation in the state.”
He emphasized that the new legal framework would end the era of arbitrary electricity service and exploitation, especially by officials of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
The governor noted that the law provides for the creation of the Osun State Electricity Regulatory Commission, which will oversee the electricity market and ensure accountability from service providers.
He said, “The commission will be empowered to license power generators, address consumer complaints, and enforce service delivery standards.
“No more unchecked maltreatment of electricity users in Osun State. DisCos must now be ready to meet their obligations.”
He also said that renewable energy would play a central role in the state’s energy mix, complementing traditional sources to create a more sustainable and stable power supply system.
“I will soon invite all stakeholders for the signing ceremony. The business community in Osun can now breathe a sigh of relief — the much-needed energy policy framework is finally in place,” Adeleke added.
He expressed gratitude to the Osun State House of Assembly, the Ministry of Energy, and all stakeholders who contributed to the drafting, consultations, and eventual passage of the bill.
