A Tribute to A Colossus of Learning And Leadership
Celebrating Professor (Chief) William Olusola Olu-Aderounmu at 80
Today, we pause to honour a man whose life has been a masterclass in service, scholarship, and quiet strength — Professor William Olusola Olu-Aderounmu, as he marks eighty remarkable years on earth.
From the classrooms of Texas Southern University, where he sharpened his intellect in Educational Management and Leadership Studies, to the corridors of Nigerian academia where he would go on to shape generations of minds — Prof. Olu-Aderounmu’s journey has been one of relentless purpose. He rose through the ranks with distinction: Dean at Lagos State College of Education, Ijanikin; Senior Lecturer and Head of Department at Lagos State University; and by 1992, a full Professor of Educational Management.
But his legacy did not stop at the lectern. As Provost of Ondo State College of Education, Ikere — a post he held across three terms — he proved that leadership, when rooted in integrity, earns its own re-election. He would later become the Pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Novena University, Vice-Chancellor of Oduduwa University in 2009, and Vice-Chancellor of Wesley University in 2015 , a rare feat of building and rebuilding institutions of higher learning, not once, but three times over.
Prof. Olu-Aderounmu also demonstrated an uncommon commitment to fairness, excellence, and the advancement of his people while serving as Provost of the College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, in the old Ondo State. He showed remarkable love for Akure and its sons and daughters, creating opportunities for many qualified Akure indigenes through appointments and contracts. His inclusive leadership and confidence in merit attracted many talented professionals from Akure into the institution, so much so that it became a subject of concern among some indigenes of Ikere, who feared that Akure sons and daughters were becoming too prominent within the college community.
Beyond appointments, his administrative brilliance transformed the institution into a national model of excellence. Under his stewardship, the Ondo State College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, won the prestigious award as the Best College of Education in Nigeria on several occasions, a testament to his visionary leadership, discipline, and unwavering pursuit of academic excellence.
His exceptional performance earned him an extraordinary level of confidence from the government of the day. When his second tenure which was statutorily expected to be his final term as Provost came to an end, the then Governor of the old Ondo State, Ambassador Bamidele Isola Olumilua, himself an indigene of Ikere-Ekiti and a man renowned for his commitment to good governance, was unwilling to let him go. Recognising that the institution was flourishing under Prof. Olu-Aderounmu’s leadership, the Governor invited the then Attorney-General of the State, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, also an illustrious son of Ikere-Ekiti, and directed him to explore the legal possibility of amending the statute establishing the institution to enable Prof. William Olu-Aderounmu serve an unprecedented third term as Provost.
History, however, had other plans. Before the proposed amendment could be concluded, the military intervention of 17 November 1993 abruptly ended the democratic administration, bringing the initiative to an unexpected halt.
That singular episode speaks volumes about the confidence reposed in Prof. Olu-Aderounmu’s capacity, integrity, and transformational leadership. It remains one of the clearest demonstrations of the respect he commanded across ethnic, political, and institutional boundaries.
His counsel has been sought far beyond the university gates — as a consultant to UNICEF, UBE, NIEPA/World Bank, and the NDDC carrying his expertise into the service of nations and children who will never know his name but will live better lives because of his work.
At 80, Prof. Olu-Aderounmu stands as living proof that education is not merely a career but a calling, one that builds people, builds institutions, and builds a future worth inheriting.
His life reminds us that true greatness is not measured by titles alone, but by the institutions strengthened, the lives transformed, and the enduring values imparted to generations. His story is one of uncommon excellence, visionary leadership, and selfless service, a legacy that will continue to inspire scholars, administrators, and public servants for many years to come.
To the students he taught, the universities he led, and the nation he served in quiet, unglamorous, essential ways: this is a debt of gratitude that a single tribute cannot repay, but today, we try.
