The African Democratic Congress (ADC), in Osun State has accused the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, of launching politically motivated attacks on former Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

In a statement by the Publicity Secretary of the party’s New Media, Akande Abimbola, the ADC described Basiru’s remarks as “reckless, hypocritical and aimed at shielding the failures of the APC-led government.”

The group alleged that the ruling party has become increasingly intolerant of criticism and was attempting to silence opposing voices.

According to the ADC, rather than addressing the alleged rising insecurity, unemployment and economic hardship across the country, Basiru “chose to divert attention by attacking Aregbesola,” a figure the group says played a significant role in shaping his political trajectory.

The ADC also claimed that Basiru previously withdrew from the Osun governorship race and faced political challenges before receiving support from Aregbesola.

It recalled the internal rifts within the APC during the 2022 elections, alleging that Basiru once referred to Aregbesola’s loyalists as “Top Biscuits,” a comment the group said heightened tensions within the party at the time.

The statement further accused the APC of attempting to “weaponise the suffering of Nigerians,” describing Basiru’s latest comments as an effort to protect his “political interests” instead of addressing issues affecting citizens.

The ADC urged the APC to concentrate on governance and desist from “political theatrics,” calling on Nigerians to stay alert and reject attempts to distract them from pressing national concerns.

As at the time of filing this report, neither Senator Basiru nor the APC had issued a response to the allegations.
