Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has paid glowing tribute to the late former President, Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a democrat whose commitment to constitutional governance and credible elections strengthened the nation’s democratic process.

In a statement marking the first anniversary of Buhari’s passing, Adeleke said the people of Osun State continue to remember the late president for ensuring that the 2022 governorship election was conducted freely and fairly, allowing the will of the electorate to prevail.

The governor said Buhari resisted pressure to manipulate the outcome of the election, insisting that the Constitution and democratic principles should guide the electoral process.

Recalling a visit to the former president after his victory in the 2022 governorship election, Adeleke said Buhari jokingly remarked that he was the only governor who had personally visited to express appreciation for allowing the Constitution to take its course.

“Former President Muhammadu Buhari is fondly remembered by our people in Osun State. In 2022, he allowed the free and fair conduct of the state election and rejected pressure to tamper with the will of the people,” Adeleke said.

The governor noted that Buhari’s respect for the Constitution remains one of his most enduring democratic legacies.

He described the late president as a man of integrity and honesty, adding that his reputation as “Mai Gaskiya” reflected his commitment to truthfulness, fairness and constitutional order.”A year after, we remember the General with a deep sense of humour and as a man who was not called ‘Mai Gaskiya’ for nothing. We miss a leader who had genuine love for democracy, especially at the subnational level,” Adeleke stated.

Governor Adeleke extended his condolences to the former First Lady, Hajia Aisha Buhari, members of the Buhari family and the late president’s associates on behalf of the government and people of Osun State.

He prayed that Buhari’s legacy of constitutional governance, fairness and respect for the rule of law would continue to inspire present and future generations of Nigerian leaders.
