Armed bandits have reportedly attacked Farin Ruwa community in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, killing residents, abducting five people and destroying harvested rice.

The attack was reported on Wednesday by security analyst Bakatsine, who raised concerns over the growing threats facing farmers and rural communities in the state.

According to the analyst, the bandits had allegedly been demanding huge sums of money from farmers before permitting them to harvest their crops.

In a post describing the incident, Bakatsine said the assailants invaded the community, abducted residents, killed some people and set heaps of harvested rice on fire.

The attack reportedly claimed the life of Saminu Adamu, who was said to have been killed despite his family paying a ransom for his release.

Adamu’s farm produce was also reportedly destroyed by the attackers, compounding the losses suffered by his family.

Five other residents were said to remain in the bandits’ custody. They were identified as Abdulrahman Shehu, Mansur Muhammad, Idi Muhammad, Abdullahi Sani and Sani Usman.

The incident has heightened concerns about the vulnerability of farmers in the area, as threats of violence and abductions continue to undermine agricultural activities and threaten rural livelihoods.

Farmers who are unable to access their fields or safely gather their produce risk losing their investments, further worsening the economic difficulties confronting affected households.

Expressing frustration over the situation, Bakatsine questioned how residents could sustain their families when harvesting crops had become a dangerous undertaking.

“How can farmers feed their families when they cannot safely harvest what they planted, and how much longer must these communities endure this suffering before help arrives?” the analyst asked.
