Regent of Abagana and ex-Presidential Aspirant, Dr. Nwachukwu Anakwenze

The Regent of Abagana and a former Presidential Aspirant, Dr Nwachukwu Anakwenze, has advised the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Joash Amupitan, SAN, to work with a deep sense of patriotism in superintending over the sensitive electoral body.

Amupitan, a professor of Law and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, at the University of Jos, has just mounted the saddle as the INEC boss following his clearance by the Senate in compliance with the Constitution.

In a letter to the new INEC chairman, which was signed by his Director General, Comrade Eric Oluwole, Anakwenze, a former Presidential Aspirant under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, noted that the unanimous approval of Amupitan’s nomination by President Bola Tinubu was a strong testimony for his suitability for the sensitive office.

Anakwenze said that Amupitan as the new INEC chairman, is coming to head the electoral body at a time when Nigeria needs men and women of integrity, and unquestionable character, to continue building on the foundation built by his worthy predecessors.

His words, “As Prof Amupitan is going into the office as our Nation Nigeria’s new INEC chairman mainly to oversee the preparations, and conduct of free, fair, and credible elections nationwide as necessary inputs for nurturing and growing our democracy, I hereby advise him strongly to devote his whole being to ensuring the success of this very sensitive national assignment.

“Prof Amupitan owes Nigeria a duty to ensure that he does everything in his power and ability to ensure that the electoral system and all the elections he conducts are not compromised by malpractices.

“Only corrupt and incompetent leaders can emerge from an already corrupt and compromised electoral system overburdened by malpractices. This would be to the detriment of the Nigerian people who Prof Amupitan is now being called to serve selflessly.

“It is for this reason that I strongly advise the new INEC chairman to strive to write his name in gold as an umpire who deploys all the necessary human and material resources at his disposal, including logistic and technological devices he inherits from his predecessors, and introduces, into delivering free, fair, and credible elections to advance democracy in our Country.

“While wishing Prof Amupitan a resounding success in office as INEC chairman, I advice him strongly to avoid anything likely to soil his name and credibility, which earned him the recognition and nomination by the President .”

Amupitan was nominated by President Tinubu to succeed Prof Mahmood Yakubu, who recently retired from office as INEC chairman on completion of his statutory ten years tenure of two equal terms.
