DSS confirms Emefiele’s arrest

The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed the arrest of the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele.

The DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya confirmed this on Saturday in a statement on his Twitter handle.

“The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is now in its custody for some investigative reasons.”

Following is the full statement titled “Emefiele, now in DSS custody”:

“The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is now in its custody for some investigative reasons.

The DSS had earlier on Saturday dismissed a report that he was in their custody.

Emefiele was suspended from office as CBN governor by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday with immediate effect.

A statement on Friday night by the Director of Information at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Mr.Willie Bassey, said that Emefiele’s was sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy, the statement said.

The statement said he had been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.

Following is the full statement from the office of the SGF, dated 9th June, 2023, which was titled: “President Tinubu suspends Emefiele from office as Central Bank Governor”:

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect.

“This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.

“Mr. Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms.”
