The immediate former Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Ibrahim Gotan, has been promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) by the Nigeria Police Force.
Reacting to his promotion, he expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Service Commission for finding him worthy of the elevation.
He described the promotion as a call to greater responsibility, stressing that the new rank would require him to redouble his efforts towards protecting lives and property.
Gotan said he remained committed to the ideals of professionalism and service to the nation, promising to continue giving his best to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians.
He said, “I appreciate the Inspector-General of Police and the Police Service Commission for the confidence reposed in me through this promotion. I see it as a call to higher responsibility.
“I will redouble my efforts to ensure the safety of all and sundry and continue to contribute meaningfully to the security of our nation.”
Gotan served as Commissioner of Police in Osun State at a period characterised by significant security and public-order challenges, particularly in the build-up to and aftermath of the 2026 governorship election.
During his tenure, he was involved in efforts to maintain law and order, strengthen public confidence in the police and improve collaboration between the command and other stakeholders in the state.
Sources within police circles described his elevation as particularly noteworthy, saying he was reportedly the only officer on the promotion list to receive a special distinction.based on his anti-corruption fight and effective community policing
The sources linked the recognition, among other considerations, to his conduct during his time in Osun, especially his reported firm stance against corruption and attempts to influence policing operations during the election period.
According to the sources, Gotan was said to have maintained a position of neutrality and resisted alleged attempts by politicians to compromise the integrity of the police during the election.
His tenure in Osun also placed him at the centre of efforts to address politically related violence and other security concerns that emerged during the electoral season.
Gotan’s elevation to AIG is expected to bring greater responsibilities within the Nigeria Police Force as he assumes a higher position in the police hierarchy.
The promotion has continued to generate congratulatory messages from colleagues, security stakeholders and residents of Osun State, many of whom acknowledged his contributions to policing in the state.
For many of his admirers, the elevation represents another milestone in the career of an officer they described as disciplined, professional and committed to national service.
