The Catholic Bishop of Osogbo Diocese, Most Rev. John Akinwumi Oyejola, has called on Christians to embrace kindness and generosity toward one another as a pathway to salvation.

Bishop Oyejola gave the charge while delivering his homily during a Sunday Mass at St Benedict Catholic Cathedral.

In his message, the cleric reminded the faithful of the reassuring words of Jesus Christ, urging them not to be troubled by life’s challenges. He noted that in a world filled with uncertainty, fear, and distractions, Christ remains the ultimate source of peace and direction.

Quoting from the Gospel of John, the bishop reiterated Jesus’ declaration: “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” explaining that Christ is the only path to salvation, the truth that liberates, and the giver of eternal life.

He stressed that Jesus’ invitation—“Come to me, and you will have life”—is meant for all believers, not just the apostles, adding that human existence and fulfilment depend entirely on a relationship with Christ.

Reflecting on events after the death and resurrection of Jesus, Bishop Oyejola noted that fear gripped the disciples, yet Christ reassured them with the words, “Do not be afraid.” He said the message remains relevant, describing life as transient and death as a transition into eternal life with God.

According to him, Christ has gone ahead to prepare a place for believers in the Father’s kingdom, but emphasised that knowing and following Him is essential to reaching that destination.

The bishop expressed concern that many Christians attend church without truly knowing Christ, likening the situation to Philip in the scriptures who, despite being with Jesus, did not fully understand Him. He cautioned against excessive pursuit of material wealth, noting that such possessions hold no value before God compared to faith.

He urged the faithful to prioritise God above all things, seek a deeper relationship with Him, and live with the consciousness of eternity.

Bishop Oyejola also encouraged Christians to cultivate a habit of sincere prayer and regular study of the Bible, warning against rushing through worship without genuine devotion.

He concluded by calling on believers to live lives marked by kindness, generosity, and love, stressing that these virtues are the true signs of those who follow Christ.
