Learn to keep your words

Reflection for the day

By Olubunmi Adenayo

*Do your best and keep the promises you make to people.*

*The promises we make are words that we speak.*

*This subject becomes germane because, not many people care a hoot to be a man or woman of their words in our contemporary generation.*

*To this end therefore, we must learn to stand by our words. It is the mark of our honour.*

*There is no doubt about it, there could be emerging situations that look unfavourable in the face of promises you earlier made, or words you earlier said, (such is the dynamics of life) it is a mark of your integrity when you keep your promises to people.*

*Please know and note that breaking your words can have very grave consequences on a man and even his posterity down the line.*

*The Awesome God, who created the heavens and the entire earth prides Himself as being a keeper of His words and promises to generations unborn. There are several scriptures to confirm this :*

*Psalms 138: [2] I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy loving-kindness and for thy truth: _for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name_.*

*Psalms 105: [8] He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations.*

*Over time, have you been breaking promises you made to people : your business partners, your siblings, neighbours, spouse, even your creator?*

*This could be the reason for your life challenges and difficulties. Yes, it could be responsible for your not going forward.*

*There was an agreement of peaceful coexistence between the nation of Israel and their neighbours – Gibeonites.*

*It was an agreement in which the inhabitants of Gibeon subtly presented themselves as staying in a place very far and wanted to be peaceful neighbours to Israel.*

*By the time Joshua and Israel knew that the people of Gibeon were their immediate neighbours, an agreement had been signed between the two nations. And an agreement is an agreement.*

*This prompted Joshua to make the popular pronouncement on the Gibeonites thus :*

*Joshua 9: [21]……Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.*

*Several generations after this agreement, King Saul rose up and made a slaughter of the people of Gibeon. And God was angry against Israel for breaking this pact that had been entered into :*

*2 Samuel 21: [1] Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.*

*To everyone of us on this matter of keeping one’s word, please have a rethink. Retract yourself in repentance from this error and seek forgiveness where you have flouted the agreement you entered into.*

*When you do this, you will be surprised at what will follow your life.*

*A man or woman who keeps his words is a person of worth and value.*

*We call such people, “men and women of integrity”.*

*Please permit me to ask you this : “are you one?”*

Top of the day to you 👍
