The political base of former governor and current minister, Adegboyega Oyetola, in Iragbiji, Osun State, recorded a major shake-up on Monday as prominent leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the town and across Boripe Local Government announced their defection to the Accord Party and pledged support for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election bid.

Leading the move is former Boripe council chairman, Kareem Afolabi, alongside about 15 other political figures.

Afolabi, long regarded as a key pillar of Oyetola’s political structure in Iragbiji, said their decision followed what he described as the governor’s “visible performance” across the state.

He noted that ongoing projects and social programmes under the Adeleke administration influenced their choice, stressing that the group intends to align with what he called the “positive direction” of governance in Osun.

The veteran politician also recalled his past political relationship with the governor’s departed father, Ayoola Adeleke, describing the governor’s leadership style as consistent with his family’s pro-people legacy.

He added that the group was further encouraged by Adeleke’s support for President Bola Tinubu.

State chairman of the Accord Party, Tolu Akande, described the defection as a major boost for the party in Boripe, assuring the new entrants of equal opportunities within the party structure.

Responding, Governor Adeleke welcomed the defectors and expressed appreciation for their endorsement, saying public service rooted in integrity remains a guiding principle for his administration.

He reiterated his commitment to expand developmental efforts if re-elected.

Several party leaders and government officials, including Senator Lere Oyewumi, were present at the event where the defectors were formally received.
