The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in Ondo State has congratulated Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and residents of Akure on the construction flag-off of the second Akure Flyover on Oyemekun-Oba Adesida-St Mathias road in the state capital.
Besides, it passed a Vote of Confidence in the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, for what it described as “his immeasurable contributions to the journalism profession and his magnanimity in providing a conducive working environment for newsrooms at various media houses in the state.”
It urged the state’s Ministries of Infrastructure and Transport to remove unnecessary Tricycles and Okada parks on Arakale road, which serves as the major alternative route for motorists during the construction period of the Flyover.
These, among others, were contained in the communique issued at the end of the union’s Ondo State Council’s monthly Congress on August 27, at the NUJ Press Centre in Akure.
Council Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, presided over the Congress, which was well attended by NUJ members across all its chapels in the state.
The communique, which was signed by the State Secretary, Mr Olaoluwa Meshack expressed concern at the continuous strange odour in Akure, the state capital and environs, especially at night.
It therefore called on the state government to fast track proactive measures in detecting the cause of the foul smell and find permanent solutions.
It urged the contractor handling the new flyover project to speed up the pace of work and complete it as scheduled.
Also, the Congress raised an alarm over the non-availability of vehicles’ number plates in the state and called on officers of the Federal Road Safety Command, FRSC, and other security agents to stop sanctioning motorists without number plates.
It approved the inauguration of a 7-member Committee for the planning and celebrations of 50th Anniversary of Journalism in Ondo State “ONDO NUJ GOLDEN JUBILEE”, including Olusola Alatise as Chairman; Bisi Longe (Secretary); Olaoluwa Meshack (Union representative); Kahinde Adewumi; Omorinola Hungbeji; Ngozi Aduloju; Oluwatosin Igheteguano.
However, the Congress frowned at what it described as “unprovoked harassment of some journalists by hoodlums led by one Temitope Romeo during the flag-off of the Akure second flyover.”
According to the communique, “ The hoodlums paraded themselves as staff of the Construction Company handling the project.
“The union called on Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa and the Bulletine Construction Company to rein Romeo and his boys, as any threat to press freedom will not be condoned by our Union.”
