A student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), David Ojuko, has demanded ₦15 million in damages and a public apology from a fellow student, Adeife Adewale, over allegations of rape he described as false and defamatory.
In a letter written through his lawyer, Kingsley Enekwe, Ojuko accused Adewale, a student in the Department of English Language and Literature, of making the allegation on February 17 and circulating it on social media alongside his phone number.
Allegation Described as False
According to the letter dated February 22, the claim was “false, malicious, reckless and without any factual foundation,” arguing that the publication portrayed Ojuko as a rapist and exposed him to ridicule and public hostility.
The counsel stated that the accusation allegedly damaged his client’s reputation among fellow students, family members, and associates, adding that several individuals reportedly contacted him referencing the allegation.
Apology Not Enough Counsel
Although Adewale reportedly issued a video apology, the lawyer argued that the retraction did not erase the reputational harm already caused.
The letter maintained that an apology does not automatically extinguish liability for defamation where substantial damage has occurred.
Ojuko is demanding:
Payment of ₦15 million as compensation for alleged defamation and emotional distress
A written apology and full retraction to be published on all platforms where the claim appeared and immediate removal of all related posts
A written undertaking to refrain from further defamatory statements
The letter warned that failure to comply within 14 days would result in legal action.
No Court Determination Yet
As of the time of reporting, no court has made any finding regarding the allegation or the counter-claims. The matter remains a dispute between the parties and may proceed to litigation if unresolved.
