The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has clarified that its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme remains fully active and operational, despite a temporary suspension of admissions for the 2026/2027 academic session.
This was contained in a statement signed by the university’s Director of Corporate Communication and Protocol, Adegbenro Adebanjo and posted on the institution’s Facebook page on Wednesday.
The university said the admission pause, which applies to only one academic session was to ensure a seamless academic calendar and facilitate smooth and effective clinical training for medical students.
FUTA dismissed claims suggesting that the medical programme had been suspended or discontinued, describing such reports as false and misleading. The institution stressed that academic activities for students currently enroled in the MBBS programme are continuing without interruption.
According to the university, the FUTA College of Health Sciences is working closely with the FUTA Teaching Hospital to guarantee uninterrupted and efficient clinical training, which remains a core requirement of the programme.
FUTA expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; the Ondo State Government under the leadership of Lucky Aiyedatiwa; the Minister of Health, Professor Mohammed Ali Pate; the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi (CFR); elder statesman Pa Reuben Fasoranti; members of the FUTA/Akure partnership; and the Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka, among other stakeholders, for their roles in the establishment of the FUTA Teaching Hospital.
The university noted that the teaching hospital is a critical component of medical training and central to the successful delivery of its MBBS programme.
The statement said the university is committed to the training and production of skilled medical manpower required for national wellbeing and development through its medical programmes.
