A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ila-Orangun, Osun State, has sentenced a 25-year-old man, Raji Ridwan, to three years imprisonment with hard labour for attempted rape.
The judgment was delivered on Friday following the swift arrest and investigation by operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps.
According to court proceedings, Ridwan allegedly unlawfully broke into the female hostel of the Federal University of Science, Ila-Orangun, where he attempted to sexually assault a female student.
The victim bravely resisted the attack and raised an alarm, prompting neighbours and fellow students to intervene.
The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended shortly after by Amotekun operatives during a coordinated search.
Upon arrest, Ridwan reportedly voluntarily confessed to the crime. He was arraigned before Magistrate Ibukun Adeniran on a one-count charge of attempted rape and pleaded guilty.
During the trial, the prosecution presented a key witness and tendered the defendant’s confessional statement through the investigating officer from the Osun Amotekun Corps.
The court found that the offence contravened Section 359 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume 2, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.
After reviewing the case and considering the defendant’s plea, Magistrate Adeniran convicted Ridwan and sentenced him to three years imprisonment with hard labour, without the option of a fine.
The Osun Amotekun Corps, in a statement following the judgment, reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring public safety and supporting the fight against sexual and gender-based violence in the state.
It also commended the vigilance of residents whose swift action aided the arrest and prosecution of the offender.
