We work within the law in Osun — Amotekun

Osun State

Amotekun Corps in Osun State has dismissed allegations by the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) that it is unlawfully arresting and detaining opposition members, describing the claims as baseless and politically motivated.

It urged the public to disregard the “deliberate misinformation” in a statement in Osogbo on Thursday by its spokesman, Mr. Yusuf Idowu Abass.

The APC had accused the security outfit of engaging in unlawful arrests, political harassment, and other acts of intimidation against its members.

But the corps said, “The claim that Amotekun is being used as a political tool to harass opposition members is patently false.

“Our operations are intelligence-led, non-partisan, and focused on addressing genuine security threats.”

Abass explained that recent arrests in Itaapa were carried out based on credible intelligence about unauthorised armed groups disguising as community security.

He clarified that the traditional leaders mentioned in the APC’s statement were only invited for questioning, not abducted.

“They were released on administrative bail and re-invited following new developments.

“No one is above the law — traditional or otherwise”.

He described as “fiction” the APC’s claim that Amotekun operates “a dingy underground cell” in Osogbo.

“Our facilities are open to oversight, and detainees’ rights are respected.

“Several national and international observers have acknowledged our professionalism,” he said.

On recruitment, Abass emphasised that all Amotekun personnel undergo thorough background checks in collaboration with statutory security agencies.

“We strongly reject the defamatory remark that we recruit cultists or thugs.

“Osun Amotekun is composed of disciplined, well-trained, and community-trusted personnel, many of whom are ex-service members with clean records,” he stated.
