… sets December 15 for final certification
Following concerns expressed by Nigerians and other stakeholders on the need to expand public access to the Preliminary Register of Voters for the 2027 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the document online,.
It said the decision aimed at strengthening transparency, improving accessibility and boosting public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general election.
Also, it disclosed that the online publication was intended to complement the physical display of the preliminary register earlier conducted at Registration Areas nationwide between October 9 and 15, 2026.
The physical exercise, which was carried out in accordance with Section 19 of the Electoral Act, 2026, provided registered voters with an opportunity to inspect their registration particulars and submit claims and objections where necessary.
The commission said the online platform would enable more Nigerians to access the register and scrutinise the information contained in it, beyond the physical display already conducted across the country.
In a press statement issued on October 26, 2026, the Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, explained that the commission had taken note of concerns raised by Nigerians and other stakeholders regarding the desirability of making the register accessible through its online platform.
He said the commission had consequently decided to publish online the same preliminary register earlier displayed at the Registration Areas.
The register can be accessed through INEC’s dedicated portal at https://display.inecnigeria.org.
According to the commission, the additional measure is intended to facilitate wider public participation in the review process and provide registered voters with another opportunity to examine their details.
INEC emphasised that the online publication does not replace the physical display but serves as a complementary measure designed to make the register more accessible to the electorate.
The commission also disclosed that it was continuing to process claims and objections arising from the exercise in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026.
The process is expected to help identify and address inaccuracies or irregularities before the final Register of Voters is certified and published.
INEC fixed December 15, 2026, for the certification and publication of the final register, ahead of the 2027 general election.
The commission stressed that the ongoing process forms part of its broader responsibility to ensure that the register used for the elections meets the required standards and reflects the outcome of the verification and correction exercise.
The development comes amid growing public interest in the integrity of voter registration data and the measures being adopted to ensure that the electoral process remains transparent and credible.
INEC said it appreciated the continued interest and constructive engagement of Nigerians and other stakeholders, noting that public participation was important to strengthening confidence in the management of the electoral process.
The commission reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability and the faithful implementation of the Electoral Act, 2026, as it prepares for the forthcoming general election.
It maintained that the publication of the preliminary register online was part of its efforts to widen access to electoral information and give registered voters an additional opportunity to scrutinise their particulars before the final register is certified.
The commission urged stakeholders to take advantage of the available access to the preliminary register, while the processing of claims and objections continues ahead of the December 15 deadline.
