The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Osun State Directorate, has urged Nigerians to prioritise their heart health and adopt healthier lifestyles to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

The State Director of the agency, Mr Adebiyi Adefarasin Stephen, made the call in a statement to commemorate World Heart Day 2026, marked globally on September 29, with the theme, “Don’t Miss the Beat.”

Adefarasin stressed the importance of awareness, early detection and preventive measures in tackling heart disease and stroke, which he said could be reduced through healthier lifestyle choices and regular medical checks…

He identified high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol consumption as some of the major risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases.

The NOA director therefore urged citizens to regularly monitor their blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, noting that early detection of abnormalities could help prevent serious health complications.

He advised Nigerians to reduce their consumption of salt, sugar and fried foods, while increasing their intake of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Adefarasin also encouraged citizens to engage in regular physical activity, avoid tobacco, limit alcohol consumption, manage stress and ensure adequate rest as part of efforts to maintain a healthy heart.

He cautioned members of the public against ignoring symptoms that could indicate a heart attack or stroke, including chest pain, difficult breathing, sudden weakness, facial drooping and difficulty in speaking.

According to him, seeking prompt medical attention when such warning signs occur could save lives and prevent long-term complications.

The NOA State Director further called on families, community leaders, schools, workplaces and health institutions to promote heart-healthy practices and increase public awareness about cardiovascular diseases.

He said simple and consistent healthy choices made daily could contribute significantly to preventing heart disease and improving overall wellbeing.
“Know your numbers, make healthy choices, stay active and don’t ignore warning signs. Don’t miss the beat — your heart matters,” Adefarasin said.

The statement was signed by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Bunmi Olaseinde, ANIPR, on behalf of the Osun State Directorate.
