Osun State Police Command has cautioned residents against the circulation of unverified reports alleging banditry invasions in parts of the state, describing the claims as false, misleading and capable of creating unnecessary panic among members of the public.
The warning comes amid growing concerns generated by security alerts being shared across various social media platforms and messaging applications, claiming that armed bandits had invaded some communities in Osun State.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abiodun Ojelabi, the Command said it had observed with concern the increasing spread of security-related rumours that lack credible verification.

According to the statement, comprehensive security assessments and intelligence-gathering operations conducted across the state have not established any evidence to support the claims being circulated.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ibrahim Gotan, stated that the Command remains committed to maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of residents, stressing that the false reports have the potential to create fear, tension and public anxiety.
“The Command wishes to state unequivocally that these reports are unfounded, misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic, fear and tension among law-abiding residents. Extensive security assessments and intelligence gathering conducted by the Command have not substantiated the claims being circulated,” the statement read.
The police boss warned individuals and groups involved in creating, sharing or amplifying false security information to desist from such acts, noting that misinformation could undermine public confidence and disrupt public order.
He further emphasized that the dissemination of unverified security alerts not only misleads residents but also hampers the efforts of security agencies working to maintain peace and stability in the state.
CP Gotan advised members of the public to verify information through official channels before forwarding or publishing such reports, particularly on social media platforms where false information can spread rapidly.
He also warned that anyone found spreading false information capable of inciting fear or causing public disorder would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Command reassured residents that security agencies across the state remain vigilant and proactive in responding to potential threats. It disclosed that covert operatives and personnel of the Violent Crime Response Unit have been strategically deployed to strengthen surveillance and enhance security across various communities.
“The Command reassures residents of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property and urges citizens to remain calm, vigilant and continue with their lawful activities without fear. Security agencies remain on alert and are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of all residents across the state,” the statement added.
The police also called on community leaders, religious bodies, youth groups and other stakeholders to support efforts aimed at maintaining peace by discouraging the spread of rumours and encouraging responsible information sharing.
Residents were urged to promptly report suspicious movements, criminal activities or security concerns to the nearest police station and other relevant security agencies for swift intervention.
The Command reiterated that effective security management requires cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public, assuring citizens that all credible information received would be treated with utmost urgency and professionalism.
The warning comes amid heightened security concerns in some parts of the country, prompting authorities in Osun State to intensify public awareness efforts and reassure residents of the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
