The Senate has approved measures to honour the late Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, including plans to name an educational institution after him in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria.

The decisions followed a motion raised by the senator representing Ondo Central, Adeniyi Adegbonmire (SAN), during plenary on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

According to a statement by Adegbonmire, the Senate approved three measures: observing a minute’s silence in honour of the deceased, constituting a delegation to visit his family and convey the legislature’s condolences, and naming an educational institution after him.

The measures are aimed at recognising Fasoranti’s contributions to democratic governance, public service and the promotion of Yoruba interests.

Fasoranti, who died at the age of 100, was a prominent figure in Yoruba political affairs and was widely respected for his commitment to democratic values and public service.

Adegbonmire’s intervention is expected to give formal legislative recognition to the late elder statesman’s legacy and preserve his contributions for future generations.

The proposed naming of an educational institution is also intended to serve as a lasting tribute to his life, principles and service to society.

The Senate’s resolutions come amid an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, traditional rulers, public officials and other Nigerians following Fasoranti’s death.

Many have described the late Afenifere leader as an influential voice in the struggle for democratic governance and the advancement of Yoruba interests.
