The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. John Otache, in Ohimini Local Government Area of the state.
Otache, the parish priest of St. Margaret’s Parish, Ajegbe-Awume, was reportedly kidnapped on October 13 while returning home from Otukpo.
The police spokesperson, DSP Aondogu Orchia, confirmed the incident on Friday in Makurdi, saying the command had launched a full investigation and was working to secure the priest’s release.
In a statement signed by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo said the priest was abducted along the Otobi Amejo-Ajegbe Road in Ohimini Local Government Area.
The diocese expressed sadness over the incident, noting that the Bishop of Otukpo, Most Rev. Michael Apochi, was deeply troubled by the development.
Itodo appealed to priests, members of religious congregations, the laity and other well-meaning individuals to pray for Otache’s safe and speedy release.
He also called for prayers for other people being held by kidnappers across the country, expressing hope that they would return safely to their families.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over the safety of Catholic clergy in Benue State, following previous abductions involving members of the diocese.
On July 9, 2026, a seminarian identified as Kelvin Ochai was reportedly abducted from the Bishop’s Residence in Otukpo.
Similarly, about three years ago, armed men kidnapped Rev. Fr. Anthony Adikwu, who was then the parish priest of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Ajegbe-Awume, in Ohimini Local Government Area.
The police have yet to announce further details about the latest abduction, including whether the kidnappers have contacted the priest’s family or the diocese.
