Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke said residents expect the immediate implementation of measures that will ensure fair, non-partisan law enforcement before, during and after the August 15 Governorship election.
He particularly called for impartial and professional policing ahead of the election, following the recent visit of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Disu to the state.
The governor, in a statement issued on Monday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke described the IGP’s visit as an important fact-finding exercise.
He said the police chief had the opportunity to hear submissions from political parties and other stakeholders, as he urged the IGP to ensure that the resolutions reached during the visit are implemented without delay.
The governor stressed the need for greater accountability within the Osun State Police Command, insisting that the Commissioner of Police must remain neutral in the investigation and prosecution of political violence cases to restore public confidence in the police.
He also called for the arrest and prosecution of anyone found culpable of criminal acts, regardless of political affiliation, maintaining that his administration does not harbour political thugs and opposes the politicisation of criminal investigations.
Adeleke said that ensuring adequate security is essential for voters to freely exercise their democratic rights, noting that recent killings and attacks threaten the conduct of a peaceful election.
Expressing confidence in the IGP’s commitment to implementing the outcomes of the visit, the governor pledged the continued support of the Osun State Government to security agencies, emphasizing that the state seeks only fair and impartial policing.
