Ondo State Judiciary Goes Global, Embraces Alternative Dispute Resolution

Ondo State
  • Establishes Multi-door Court House; Institute of Chartered Mediators, Conciliators, ICMC

Long before now, there was only one known system to Justice. This is by Litigation either for Criminal and Civil matters.

Today, with modernity, Nigerian Legal System has gone global with Alternative Dispute Resolution(ADR) which makes the dispensation of Justice less cumbersome, faster and cheaper.

Here, Disputants will have a handshake and eat from the same plate and table after resolution of their case the result of which is binding and legal.

With the passage of Ondo State Multi-Door Court House into Law in 2022 and with the retinue of qualified Lawyers, Mediators, Conciliators and Arbitrators, the sky is the limit in the dispensation of Justice in Ondo State.

There is no more delay of Justice and with the saying that, “Justice delayed is Justice denied” anymore.

The 2022 Law was enacted to meet the exigencies of improving our administration of Justice system by ending expensive, time consuming and inconvenient litigation in Courts.

Multi-Door Court is established by law, legal and it is under the Judiciary. It is a more friendly Court House system with several doors such as Mediation, Conciliation, Arbitration, Restorative Engagement, Adjudication, Med-Arb, Evaluation, Mediative-Conciliation (A Supper hybrid Mediation,Construction Arbitration etc.

ODMDC has various Departments headed by legal personnel under a Director General, supervised by three ADR Judges, under experienced  Board/Council members known as Governing Council that is vested with overall supervision of the Management.

The Council is made up of Professionals with adequate knowledge and experience in ADR.

With this, ADR has become more popular and effective in settling disputes. Either Litigation or ADR, the main purpose is to settle matters and allow Justice to prevail.

In Yoruba Palance, we say “Ka ro’so mo’di, ka ro’di ma’so, kidi mase gbofo ni koko…” meaning that, “whatever method is used in covering our body, so far we are not naked, is alright”. This is the ultimate essence of ADR long practiced by tradition and  known to law as practiced in Ondo State and the entire World.

It is compulsory for all Legal Practitioners to first introduce ADR to Clients according to our Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC) Section 15:3(d). Same goes with the Nigerian Police that must have Mediation Department and Officers in accordance with the 2020 Police Act that empowers the IG to do so.
