ASUU-FG Agreement: Ondo Medical Varsity shuts down as ASUU begins indefinite strike
— As state-owned varsities shut over agreement
AKURE — The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMEDO), has commenced a total and indefinite strike over the Ondo State Government’s alleged failure to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and pay arrears dating back to January 1, 2026.
The decision was reached at a congress meeting following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management and the state government.
In a statement signed by the union’s Chairperson, Comrade Abraham O. Oladebeye, and Secretary, Comrade Adeniran O. Akinola, ASUU-UNIMEDO said it reviewed the situation and found that the agreement had not been implemented at the university.
The union directed all members to withdraw from statutory academic functions with immediate effect from 11:25am on Thursday, effectively halting academic activities at the institution.
The directive covers lectures, continuous assessment tests, examinations and seminars at undergraduate, conversion and postgraduate levels.
It also includes departmental, faculty, committee and Senate meetings, whether physical or virtual.
The union further suspended the supervision of students’ research projects, industrial training (IT) and fieldwork, as well as other academic duties.
ASUU-UNIMEDO said the strike would remain in force until the 2025 agreement was fully implemented at the university and all accrued arrears from January 1, 2026, were paid.
“Congress resolved that this TOTAL, COMPREHENSIVE AND INDEFINITE STRIKE would persist and subsist, pending the FULL implementation of the Agreement with the accrued arrears from 1st January, 2026 in the University, and subsequent directive from NEC,” the statement said.
The union expressed disappointment over what it described as the state government’s failure to act despite the ultimatum.
It also directed the Branch Executive Council to engage the public and media on the matter, while activating the Branch Strike Coordinating Committee to monitor compliance.
The development comes as ASUU chapters at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, have also embarked on indefinite strikes over the same issue.
The action has further deepened the industrial crisis in Ondo State’s public universities.
