Jethro, a leader of leaders – 2

Reflection for the day

By Olubunmi Adebayo

*As mentioned yesterday, we shall conclude our discussion today as we continue with beaming our search light of Reflections on Jethro, the unique minor character in the Bible, but with major lessons to learn from.*

*8) Jethro told Moses to establish a Lower Court which will handle minor matters among the people of Israel. The courts were to be headed by the delegated leaders Moses had carefully selected – Exo 18 : 22. The lower courts were to sit frequently.*

*9) Moses was told to establish a Higher Court which would handle major and critical matters that could not be handled by the minor courts. Moses was to preside over the Higher Court – Exo 18 : 22. The Higher Court was recommended to hold seldomly.*

*10) Without mincing words, Jethro told Moses that the assignment of God he had been called into, despite being exciting, would wear him out with time, if he wanted to do it all alone by himself, suggesting delegation as enunciated above.*

*Jethro also taught us a great lesson by establishing _key qualifications of a would-be leader_.*

*He recommended the following qualifications for whoever wanted to aspire to become a leader before the people of Israel and Moses their leader :*

*1) The fellow must belong to the class of “able men”, ie, such a person must be a capable person – Exo 18 :21.*

*2) The person must be God – fearing, ie, men who are Godly and God focused, Exo 18: 21.*

*3) Men that are truthful, honest and just , Exo 18:21.*

*4) Men who hate covetousness. Men who will not soil their hands with grafts and public dainties.*

*5) Men who believe in doing all things for the love of doing such and for public good. Men who would labour to promote the best interest of the generality of the people by inspiring others to live uprightly.*

*With all the above, you will agree with me that we have a lot to learn from this minor character who was a leader of leaders as he taught Moses, and teach others who may come along the corridor of life subsequently, including you that is reading this.*

Top of the day to you 👍
