Osun Civil Societies Coalition (OCSC) has urged Nigerians and leaders across all levels to engage in deep, sober reflection rather than hollow celebrations, citing the country’s growing socio-economic and political challenges, even 65 years after freedom from colonial rule

The group expressed concern over the worsening economic conditions, democratic setbacks, and rising youth unemployment, describing the nation’s current state as far from the dream envisioned at independence in 1960.

It said in a statement released in Osogbo and signed by the coalition’s Chairman, Comrade (Dr.) Waheed Lawal: “The dream of independence was one of freedom, dignity, and prosperity for all; yet, six and a half decades later, Nigerians are still grappling with hunger, poverty, and disillusionment,” Dr. Lawal lamented.

It painted a grim picture of the everyday Nigerian experience, noting that inflation, poor governance, and widespread joblessness have replaced the hope that once defined the country’s independence era.

“Instead of hope, frustration and despair have become the daily reality of citizens. Food has become unaffordable for the common man, and millions of youths roam the streets without jobs,” the statement read.

In addition to economic hardships, OCSC highlighted the deterioration of Nigeria’s democratic values, citing increasing disregard for the rule of law, suppression of dissenting voices, and a shrinking civic space as dangerous trends that threaten the nation’s progress.

To reverse this trajectory, the coalition put forward key demands aimed at rescuing Nigeria’s democratic and socio-economic landscape. These include: Pro-people economic policies focused on food security, agricultural growth, and job creation.

Others include respect for democratic institutions and the rule of law, including strict adherence to court rulings and protection of civil liberties, inclusive governance that puts citizens’ interests at the core of policy-making, not as afterthought and fixing the Grassroots: Osun’s Local Government Crisis.

Focusing on Osun State, OCSC decried the prolonged local government administration crisis, stressing that it hampers grassroots development and democratic participation.

“Local governments are the closest to the people. Denying them functional leadership is denying citizens basic access to governance and development,” Dr. Lawal warned

While commending the Osun State Government for strides made in workers’ welfare, healthcare, and youth empowerment, the coalition stressed the urgent need to recruit more teachers to rescue the state’s ailing education sector.

“No society can rise above the quality of its education. Osun’s children deserve the best, and education must be made a top priority,” the statement noted.

The coalition also called for greater attention to the agricultural sector, pointing out Osun’s potential to become the food basket of the Southwest if properly harnessed.

As the 2026 governorship election in the state draws near, OCSC urged all political parties in Osun to prioritize people-centered campaigns, denounce political violence, and commit to a peaceful electoral process.

The coalition emphasized the importance of youth participation in the ongoing voter registration exercise, noting that active civic engagement is crucial to strengthening democracy.

“Your vote is your power. Democracy can only thrive when citizens take ownership of the electoral process,” it urged.

The Coalition, however called on leaders at all levels to govern with empathy, fairness, and accountability, while urging citizens to remain vigilant, informed, and organized.

“Nigerians must not give up on the dream of a better country. The struggle for a free, just, and prosperous nation continues—and we will not relent,” the coalition affirmed.

The group reiterated its commitment to stand with the people, amplify their voices, and hold public officials accountable until the true meaning of independence — freedom, equality, and shared prosperity — is realized for all Nigerians.
