The multi-hour downpour that pounded the city of Nibo, a part in Awka, on Wednesday recorded a massive flood that swept away a thirteen year-old teenager at a popular ‘Obibia bridge’ behind Governor’s Lodge.
The deceased was said to have been inside a car with two people and a driver when the day that was so bright turned dark.
An eye witness, Mr. Uzoma Egbe who confirmed the incident to Vanguard opined that the driver of the vehicle was the real cause of the accident.
His words: “When we came to the bridge this morning, we were contemplating on how to cross the submerged bridge.
“My brother Ejike Oligba, alias ‘Pouker’ who owns a bus managed to cross over with the help of those that assisted in pushing his bus off the bridge. People trying to drag out the car
“Barely five minutes that Pouker miraculously escaped, this man whose car was stuck inside the bridge came, insisting that since Pouker crossed over, he too can do same.
“We warned him but his optimistic mind wooed him in. Rather driving straight on the bridge, he swiftly entered the Obibia River.
“People managed to save him and two others but all the efforts made to save the little boy and the car was futile for several minutes.
“The little boy, however was saved when a towing van came and brought the car out. People managed to bring the little boy out and rushed him to a nearby hospital.
“The car is still inside the bridge.
“We have called the attention of Governor Willie Obiano in that place but he has not responded. All our roads are death traps.
“We are calling on him again to repay our roads”, he finally said.
