The Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and the failure to pay outstanding arrears owed its members.
The union declared the industrial action after a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management and the Ondo State Government expired without its demands being addressed.
The decision was reached at the union’s congress on Thursday, August 27, and contained in a communique signed by the branch Chairman, Abraham Oladebeye, and Secretary, Adeniran Akinola.
According to the union, the outstanding arrears date back to January 1, 2026, while the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU has yet to be fully implemented at the institution.
Following the declaration, ASUU-UNIMEDO directed its members to suspend all statutory academic duties, effectively halting academic activities at the university.
The affected activities include lectures, continuous assessments, examinations and seminars at undergraduate, conversion and postgraduate levels. Members are also to suspend the supervision of students’ research projects, industrial training and fieldwork.
The directive further covers departmental, faculty, committee and Senate meetings, including those conducted physically or virtually.
ASUU-UNIMEDO said the strike would continue until the 2025 agreement is fully implemented at the university and all accrued arrears from January 1, 2026, are paid.
The union also directed its Branch Executive Committee to activate the Branch Strike Coordinating Committee to monitor compliance with the industrial action and its resolutions.
The development is expected to disrupt academic activities at the state-owned medical university, coming amid renewed industrial disputes in several public universities over the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
As of the time of filing the reports reviewed, neither the Ondo State Government nor the university management had issued an official response to the strike declaration.
