The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko branch, has said it will not suspend its ongoing strike until the Ondo State Government begins full implementation of an agreement reached with the university unions.
The branch chairman, Prof Boluwaji Oshodi, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Akure on Tuesday.
Oshodi acknowledged that the state government had reached an agreement with the unions on the implementation of the Federal Government-union agreement, but said the development alone was not enough to end the industrial action.
According to him, the union is waiting for the government to translate the agreement into concrete action before considering a return to the classrooms.
“The state government and the union have reached an agreement on the implementation of the FGN-Union agreement.
“However, we are still waiting for the implementation. That is when the strike will be called off,” Oshodi told NAN.
Academic and non-academic unions across the three state-owned universities are currently observing a total and indefinite strike over unpaid allowances and other outstanding issues affecting their members.
The industrial action has affected academic activities in the institutions as the unions await the fulfilment of the commitments made by the state government.
The Ondo State Government had announced on Monday that it had reached an agreement with the striking unions and would fully implement the Federal Government-union agreement.
However, the ASUU-AAUA chairman said the union needed to see evidence of implementation before calling off the strike.
Oshodi described the government’s approval of the agreement as a welcome development but maintained that implementation remained the condition for ending the industrial action.

The development means that academic activities at Adekunle Ajasin University and other affected state-owned institutions will remain disrupted pending further action by the unions.
The ASUU-AAUA leadership is expected to assess the implementation of the agreement before determining its next step.
