The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) on Tuesday visited the Osun State College of Health Technology for oversight activities and an orientation programme for members of the union at the institution.

The visit featured a joint congress, headcount of members and an orientation session aimed at strengthening union activities and promoting unity among staff of the college.

The ASUP team was led by its National President, Shammah Sunday Kpanja, and received by the Chairman of the OSCO-Health chapter, Comrade Ayo Ogungbe, alongside other members of the chapter executive.

During the orientation programme, the National President, who was represented by former ASUP Zone ‘C’ Coordinator, Dr. Olawale Adetunji, emphasised that the essence of unionism is not confrontation but constructive engagement between workers and their employers.

Adetunji advised members of the union to organise themselves responsibly and ensure that their actions promote dialogue rather than hostility with management.

According to him, labour unions are primarily established to negotiate improved welfare and working conditions for members through peaceful and strategic engagement.

He further urged members to familiarise themselves with the union’s constitution and guiding laws to avoid violating established rules during negotiations.

The ASUP leadership also commended the executive of the OSCO-Health chapter under the leadership of Comrade Ogungbe for what it described as transparent and accountable management of the union’s affairs at the college.

Also speaking at the event, ASUP Zone ‘C’ Coordinator, Comrade Masopa Nurudeen, called on members to remain united and support the chapter leadership in its efforts to secure better welfare for staff.

Nurudeen noted that disagreements are inevitable in organisational life but stressed that the ability to manage crises through unity and dialogue remains critical to the success of any union

In his welcome address, the Chairman of ASUP at the college, Comrade Ayo Ogungbe, appreciated the national leadership of the union for the visit and their support for the chapter.

He assured the visiting delegation that the union would continue to grow stronger at the institution while maintaining commitment to the welfare and professional interests of its members.
