The National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), South-West, Prince Diran Iyantan, has paid tribute to the late former Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON, on his 70th posthumous birthday, describing him as a courageous statesman whose contributions to democracy, security and good governance remain indelible.

He spoke in a statement signed by him.

Iyantan said Akeredolu, popularly known as Aketi and Mr Talk-and-Do, distinguished himself through his forthrightness, commitment to justice and willingness to defend his convictions in the interest of the people.

He recalled Akeredolu’s distinguished legal career as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, as well as his service as Attorney-General and Governor of Ondo State. He noted that the late governor also played significant roles in the South-West Governors’ Forum and the Southern Governors’ Forum.

According to Iyantan, one of Akeredolu’s enduring contributions was his role in advancing the establishment of the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun Corps, as part of efforts to address insecurity and strengthen community-based intelligence.

He said Akeredolu’s advocacy for State Police and true federalism remains relevant to Nigeria’s ongoing search for a more effective and responsive security architecture.

“Aketi was a man of courage and conviction who believed that leadership must be defined by action and service to the people. His advocacy for Amotekun, State Police and true federalism reflected his determination to make governance more responsive to the realities of our communities.

“Although he is no longer with us, his ideas continue to influence national conversations on security, constitutional reform and responsible governance,” Iyantan stated.

The APC chieftain urged political leaders and relevant stakeholders to honour Akeredolu’s memory by translating his ideas into practical policies that promote security, justice, accountability and sustainable development.

He also extended his goodwill to the Akeredolu family and the people of Ondo State, praying that the late governor’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

Iyantan concluded that the most meaningful tribute to Akeredolu would be the realisation of his vision for a safer Nigeria, stronger federating units and a governance system that places the welfare and security of citizens at its centre.

Aketi’s voice may have fallen silent, but his convictions and contributions to public service remain part of Nigeria’s democratic legacy.
