Absence of EFCC counsel stalls Ondo Speaker’s arraignment

Ondo State

The absence of counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the Ondo High Court on Tuesday stalled arraignment of Speaker Bamidele Oleyelogun.

Oloyelogun was to be arraigned at the State High court within the Olokuta Correctional Centre in Akure.

The Speaker, Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. Bode Adeyelu and three other staff were questioned in March for alleged diversion and subsequent sharing of the sum of N2.4 million.

This followed a petition by a former Deputy Speaker, Hon. Iroju Ogundeji, who urged the EFCC to investigate how the fund was spent.

Ogundeji had alleged that the N2.4m was for a seminar held in Lagos but those scheduled to attend the seminar never left Akure.

The Speaker arrived the court premises at about 8am accompanied by some lawmakers.

Counsel to EFCC, Dibang Frederick said a new date has been picked for the arraignment of Speaker Oleyelogun.

He assured that the legal team was prepared to attend next court sitting.

Dibang however said charges against the Speaker would be made available at the next adjournment date.

Journalists were barred from gaining access to the Correctional Centre to cover the court proceeding.

Some officials of the Correctional Centre said they were acting on instructions not to allow journalists cover the arraignment while others said it was a national directive to prevent jail break.
