Workers at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, under the aegis of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP), have commenced an indefinite strike.
This is to protest the non-payment of six months’ salary arrears and the failure of the Ondo State Government to implement the national minimum wage.
The unions staged a peaceful protest within the school premises over what they described as continued neglect of staff welfare in the institution.
Speaking during the protest, Chairman of NASU, Mr. Julius Olugbenga-Aro, and his SSANIP counterpart, Mr. Saka Olokungboye, acknowledged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s developmental strides and his recent approval for the conversion of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic to a university.
They called on the governor to authorize immediate payment of outstanding salaries, ensure full implementation of the institution’s 2025 budget, and commence payment of the new national minimum wage.
Despite the industrial action, the union leaders affirmed their unwavering commitment to academic development, urging the state government to act swiftly in resolving the issues to avoid prolonged disruption of the school calendar.
