Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Ekiti State Council have elected a new set of executives that will pilot the affairs of the union for the next three years.

At the election conducted on Wednesday at the union’s press centre in Ado Ekiti, Kayode Babatuyi of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria emerged as the new chairman, unopposed by the NUJ in the state.

Babatuyi, who was the immediate past General Secretary of the Union, emerged unopposed through the state delegates congress held at the council secretariat in Oke Bareke, Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Others who emerged through consensus were Olayinka Ilori, Vice Chairman; Seun Ogunsakin, Secretary; Abidemi Sikiru, Treasurer; Victor Akinkuolie, Assistant Secretary; Bunmi Ibiteye, Auditor; and Lawrence Ibitoye, Financial Secretary.

Speaking during the inauguration of the new state executives, the NUJ National President, Chris Iziguzo, commended the members of the union for their rare display of sportsmanship and maturity in electing their leaders.

Iziguzo, represented by the National Vice President B Zone, Ronke Sanmo, also commended the Yakoob Popoola-led Credential Committee for conducting one of the freest, most credible, and rancour-free elections in the history of the union.

He equally applauded the outgone State Chairman, Comrade Rotimi Ojomoyela, for redefining the council through various programmes and policies, saying he has etched his name on the sand of time.

He urged members to support the newly inaugurated leadership in piloting the affairs of the council, adding that it will take the support of every member for the union to witness more development.

The outgoing chairman, Ojomoyela, thanked members of the union for the successes his administration recorded, saying Ekiti NUJ under his leadership has made indelible marks.

Ojomoyela added that he was fulfilled leaving the council better than he met it, noting that he served the union selflessly with unadulterated commitment as he wanted to be remembered after his exit.

He attributed the successes recorded to God, who he said had been guiding his steps and supporting other executives and members of the union in the state.

Ojomoyela, who expressed confidence in the ability of his successor to perform credibly well, urged all journalists in the state to extend support to the new administration.

In his acceptance speech, Babatuyi thanked the members of the council for the confidence they had in him, saying he would not disappoint them.

He promised to build on the giant strides and legacies of his predecessors, adding that his administration would operate an open-door, inclusive leadership style as well as prioritise member welfare.
